Here's My Story

For nearly a century, I've stood proudly in the heart of Bloomingdale, witnessing the neighborhood's transformation while preserving my own remarkable history. I was built in 1930 as an orphanage, offering hope and shelter to children in need. In the 1950s, I began a new chapter when I was thoughtfully converted into the single-family residence you see today.

I've proudly retained many of the architectural details that make me truly one of a kind. My original stacked porches and rare back-to-back design are unlike almost anything else in the District. Every brick, every room, and every corner reflects a piece of Washington's past.

One of my greatest honors was becoming the home of Dr. Bertha Holliday, a nationally recognized psychologist, educator, and civil rights advocate whose influence reached far beyond these walls. I watched her dedicate her life to mentoring generations of Black psychologists, advancing diversity in psychology, and serving her community with unwavering commitment. A Harvard graduate with appointments and affiliations at Cornell University, the University of Texas, the University of Chicago, Vanderbilt University, and the American Psychological Association, Dr. Holliday's impact was felt across the nation.

But her heart was always here in Bloomingdale. From within my walls, she worked tirelessly as an ANC Commissioner, a longtime member of the Bloomingdale Civic Association, and a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for more than 50 years. She helped protect the neighborhood from incompatible development, founded the Bloomingdale House Tour to fund scholarships for local students, preserved the history of African Americans in Bloomingdale, secured grants to celebrate that history, and even represented the community on an international stage through work connected with the United Nations. Her legacy continues to shape Bloomingdale, and I'm proud to have been part of it.

Today, I've been thoughtfully updated while honoring my historic character. My main residence spans three spacious levels with three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, generous living spaces, abundant natural light, and a luxurious jetted soaking tub perfect for relaxing after a long day.
